The setting is the garden house of the Sidley Park estate, which the occupants of both time periods use as a space for their academic pursuits. The circular room feels cold and gray, and contains no notable furniture aside from the custom-built table which anchors both the space and the action of the play. Books and manuscripts are piled onto the sills of the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the garden, painted with light on a curved cyclorama.
A time-jumping journey ensues when the residents of Sidley Park of the early 1800s and their present-day descendants struggle to balance their drives to achieve academic greatness with their passions to pursue matters of the heart. While the past residents attempt to uncover the elusive mathematical proofs of the future, and their contemporaries investigate murders and mysteries of the past, both discover that a perfect equation can never exist as long as love and sex are around to stir order into chaos.
