While their father is fighting in the American Civil War, four sisters and their mother struggle to find the balance between their individual dreams for the future and the traditional roles of marriage and motherhood that society deems fit for them.
An open unit set in a black box space suggesting only a large window and a fireplace offers the necessary flexibility to serve the production’s various settings. Since each sister and their mother reveal desires that involve paper, the entire set is decoupaged with printed recreations of Civil War-era maps, sheet music, letters, book pages, and drawings.
